You Were Never Meant to Carry It Alone from Exodus 18(Monday Morning Faith)
There is a lie many of us quietly believe: if I care the most, I should do the most.
We may never say those words out loud, but we often live as though they are true. We pile more onto our schedules. We take responsibility for problems that aren't ours to solve. We hesitate to ask for help because we don't want to inconvenience anyone. We convince ourselves that being faithful means being available for everything. Eventually, we become exhausted.
When we read Exodus 18, Moses is carrying an impossible load. From morning until evening, people line up to bring him every dispute, every question, and every problem. Moses isn't lazy. He's not selfish. He's trying to serve God and serve people. But even good intentions can become unhealthy when we begin carrying what God never asked us to carry. That's why Jethro's words are so important: "This job is too heavy a burden for you to handle all by yourself."
Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is admit that we need help.
God has never intended His people to live the Christian life in isolation. He gives us families, friends, mentors, church leaders, and fellow believers because we need one another. We worship together. We serve together. We encourage one another. We share one another's burdens. The church isn't simply a place we attend; it's a family where we learn to follow Jesus together. For many of us, asking for help feels uncomfortable. We worry that it makes us look weak or incapable. But the opposite is often true. Humility is not pretending we have it all together. Humility is recognizing our limits and trusting that God often works through the people He has placed around us.
The beautiful part of Exodus 18 is that Moses listens. He doesn't defend himself. He doesn't insist that his way is best. He receives wise counsel, shares the responsibility with others, and the entire nation benefits. Moses becomes a stronger leader because he is humble enough to learn.
That same invitation is before us today.
Maybe you've been carrying a burden that was never meant to be yours alone. Maybe you've convinced yourself that no one else can do it as well as you can. Maybe you've been so busy helping everyone else that you've forgotten to let anyone help you. What if God is inviting you to lay that burden down?
Perhaps the next step isn't working harder. Perhaps it's asking someone to pray with you. Maybe it's inviting another person to serve alongside you. Maybe it's listening to the wise counsel you've been resisting. Or maybe it's simply remembering that your life was never meant to revolve around your own strength. The gospel reminds us of this truth. We could never carry the weight of our own sin, so Jesus carried it for us on the cross. And after saving us, He didn't send us out alone. He placed us into His church—a body where every member matters and every believer has a part to play.
You don't have to prove your faithfulness by carrying everything yourself. You are free to trust God, share the load, and walk with His people. That's not weakness.
That's God's design.
Father, thank You for reminding me that I was never meant to carry life's burdens alone. Forgive me for trusting my own strength more than Your design. Help me to walk humbly, receive the wisdom You provide, and faithfully share the work You've given me with others. Thank You for giving me Jesus and the family of God to walk beside me each day. Amen.
